BRUSSELS, Feb 28 (KUNA) -- The European Union (EU) renewed its call, Friday, for the belligerent parties in Sudan to cease fire "especially in light of the Holy month of Ramadan" in order "to allow the people of Sudan to spend time with their families and loved ones".
The EU stated in a press release that the war began two years ago during Ramadan and has not allowed the Sudanese people "to have peace".
The statement emphasized that "the people of Sudan need a sign of hope", noting that the ceasefire must pave the way for a lasting arrangement that enables 'a comprehensive political process".
The EU stressed in the statement that "only then will the people of Sudan be able to return to their lives, and the country will move toward reconciliation and recovery".
The EU reiterated its commitment to providing assistance to the people of Sudan, which it said would only be effective if safe and direct access for all humanitarian operations is guaranteed by all relevant parties at all times, regardless of the ceasefire.
The United Nations has warned that Sudan is on the brink of an unprecedented humanitarian disaster, with famine threatening the lives of thousands. (end) arn.mt
