February 1, 2025 (EL OBEID) – Rapid Support Forces (RSF) shelling on El Obeid, the capital of Sudan’s North Kordofan state, on Saturday night killed and injured civilians, residents said. The shelling followed the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) capture of Um Rawaba, about 145 kilometres (90 miles) from El Obeid, two days earlier. “The RSF shelling targeted the Al-Bitarol neighbourhood, resulting in civilian casualties,” one resident told Sudan Tribune, declining to be named for security reasons. The shelling also struck homes and vehicles carrying goods, the resident added. While social media posts suggested a death toll of at least seven, Sudan Tribune could not independently verify the number of casualties. Videos shared online showed vehicles ablaze, with volunteers struggling to contain the fires. The RSF has besieged El Obeid, but local sources said the SAF’s advance from Um Rawaba towards Al-Rahad could potentially break the siege. The conflict between the SAF and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has caused a humanitarian crisis and displaced millions.
