February 4, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – Engineers from the Khartoum State Water Authority came under sniper fire from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Tuesday while assessing damage at the Bahri water plant, the authority said. The authority said in a statement that the engineers were attempting to evaluate the damage to the plant, a vital source of water for the capital, ahead of planned repairs. However, they were forced to withdraw after coming under fire from snipers in the Kuwaiti Building. The RSF remains deployed in numerous high-rise buildings in central Khartoum and along the Nile Street, including several ministries and the Presidential Palace. In recent weeks, the Sudanese army has regained control of much of Bahri, north of Khartoum. Authorities are working to restore damaged infrastructure, including water plants and hospitals, so residents can return. The Bahri plant produces around 300,000 cubic meters of water daily, supplying a large part of Khartoum state. However, it was heavily damaged during fighting between the RSF and the army, causing it to shut down and worsening the capital’s water shortages. The conflict between the two factions, which erupted in mid-April, has disrupted essential services and caused a humanitarian crisis.
