February 9, 2025 (JUBA) – The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) has appointed Ambassador Major General (rtd) George Aggrey Owinow as the new interim chairperson of the body, replacing Ambassador Major General (rtd) Charles Tai Gituai. The peace monitoring body, in a statement issued on Sunday, said Amb. Owinow was nominated by the Government of Kenya and later endorsed by the East African regional bloc (IGAD). For more than our decades, noted the statement, Amb Maj Gen Owinow has had a distinguished military and diplomatic career, serving in different security and diplomatic missions in Africa. He recently served as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda (2020–2022). Prior to that, he was Deputy Force Commander for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) (2019–2020). The appointment of the new Interim Chairperson, according to RJMEC, comes at a critical time. South Sudan’s extended Transitional Period, where a range of critical pending tasks need to be implemented to pave the way for elections in December 2026, commences in barely two weeks. In September last year, South Sudan’s parties to the 2018 peace agreement extended the transitional period by another two years. (ST)
