One thousand days into the conflict in Ukraine, a top defense and security analyst has warned that Western indecision and Vladimir Putin’s calculated nuclear threats are deepening the crisis. In an interview with Al Arabiya’s Chief International Anchor Hadley Gamble, Air Vice-Marshal (Ret.) Sean Bell dismissed Putin’s recent nuclear threats as “saber-rattling” aimed at exploiting NATO’s vulnerabilities.“Putin knows it’s a really effective... saber to rattle that scares everybody, and it’s worked,” Bell stated. “He keeps saying it, and we step back from the brink.”Bell’s remarks come as Russia updated its nuclear doctrine Tuesday, responding to the outgoing Biden Administration’s approval Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) for Ukrainian use in strikes against Russian territory. The revised doctrine permits nuclear retaliation if Russia perceives any attack by a non-nuclear NATO member as being backed by a nuclear power, and it also justifies a nuclear response to conventional threats
